When the earth originally formed it was far too hot for liquid water or any life to exist. This state continued for nearly a billion years. Before seas with temperatures and conditions conducive to life formed, there was no life on earth. Or at least no life as we know it, nor that has left any trace of its existence.

According to current scientific understanding, life first appeared on Earth around 3.7 to 3.5 billion years ago, with the earliest evidence of life being fossilized microbial mats found in rocks of this age and in chemical signatures of microbial organisms.
